St. Anthony's 4-H Update

Merced County held its annual Communications Day on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at Snelling Merced-Falls School. There were 12 members of St. Anthony’s 4-H club who participated. Two of our younger members, Andre Dalia and Garret Creighton, earned a blue seal for their demonstration on How to Make Peanut-Butter Heaven. The following eight participants earned gold seals: Tess Shoonhoven (Demonstration) Jared Campos, Tyler Shoonhoven (Educational Display) Brennen Reyna (Prepared Speech) Asia Reyna, Courtney Creighton (Illustrated Talk) James Petanon, Tess Shoonhoven (Interpretive Reading) Tilly Shoonhoven (Impromptu Speech). There were two gold medalist from our group: Timothy Shoonhoven for his impromptu speech Why I joined 4-H and Emma Reyes for her illustrated talk All About Kits. All of the gold seal and gold medal recipients will move on to “Regional Presentations Day”. This will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at Denair High School. Congratulations on all of your hard work and good luck to everyone who is moving on to the next level.


Atwater FFA Sweeps Reedley College Field Day Contest

Twenty eight Atwater High School FFA members joined various California high school agriculture students representing nearly 50 high school teams throughout California at the Reedley College Field Day on April 9th. The efforts of the students earned them the 2011 Reedley College Field Day Sweepstakes Award with Agronomy and the Milk Quality & Dairy Foods earning 1st high teams overall. The Land judging team earned 3rd, the Floriculture team earned 4th, the Light Horse team earned 4th, the Ag Mechanics team earned 5th, and the Specialty Animal team placed in the top ten overall.

“This was the 2nd year in a row the Atwater FFA earned the Reedley College FFA Sweepstakes Award,” said FFA advisor Beth Knapp. “We are very proud of the efforts from our students.”

The field day is composed of a variety of agriculture Career Development Events (CDE’s) where students demonstrate their intellectual and “hands-on” skills in agricultural related fields and occupations. Individual highlights included James Bray placing 1st high individual overall, The Agronomy team’s Mekayla Coughran, Jackie Vasquez, Nikki Schiber, and Taylor Ferreira placing 1st through 4th overall, and the Milk Quality dairy products team’s Mary Thao placing 2nd overall and Jose Vargas placing 5th overall. The final FFA Field Day of the year is the state championships at Cal Poly, SLO on Saturday, May 7th with the winning teams earning the opportunity to represent California at the National FFA Finals in Indianapolis, Indiana in October.
