Ag Crimes Prevention
Anyone who is involved in agriculture in Merced County is painfully aware that AG crime continues to be a problem. Unfortuantely, this is an issue trending, not only in Merced County or the State of California, but nationwide. Protecting our farming community is a task that the Merced County Sheriff’s Office takes very seriously. Whereas, completely eliminating crime altogether is not a possiblity, community members can take an active role in the reduction and prevention of such crime. The Sheriff’s Office would like everyone to be aware of things that can be done to help minimize the risks of being a victim. Document your inventory of equipment. This includes everything from farm vehicles to cattle. Having a good description and serial numbers for property can increase the chances of its recovery. Be aware of your surroundings. If something doesn’t look right, take notice. Look out for suspicous persons or vehicles either on your property or a neighbor's. If you have a piece of paper and pen handy, write down what you see, like vehicle license plates or descripitons of vehicles/persons. Get to know your neighbors. The more people watching out for your safety and property, the better! Report in-progress crimes to 9-1-1. It’s not recommended to attempt to investigate a crime on your own. Summons the assistance of law enforcement before you consider confronting someone who may be up to no good. Your safety is paramont. Lastly, report all crimes and thefts. A lot of people feel that they are bothering law enforcement if they report a incident or believe nothing can be done. Law enforcement needs to know what is happening. A particular incident may not necessarily be solved, but may tie into a separate case that can be. Help protect our resources and make Merced County safe.
